Adyar is a prime region located in south Chennai. It lies on the southern bank of Adyar river. The Adyar river has some historical significance as the battle of Adyar River was fought in 1746 between the French and the East India Company who were aided by the Nawab of Arcot. Adyar became a suburb of Madras in 1740. After the establishment of the international headquarters of the Theosophical Society by Mrs. Helena Blavatsky in 1883, the locality started growing quickly. Adyar was added to the Chennai Corporation limits in 1948.
